"Heavenly Bodies" The MET Gala-NYC

¿Controversial? ¡Sí, muchísimo! Hay quienes dicen que hay mezclas que no deben hacerse, y esta en particular hizo mucho ruido y dio tanto de qué hablar.

Lo que yo creo es que si mezclamos la Religión y la Moda, tenemos una combinación muy interesante que va muy atrás, tan atrás en el tiempo, que sorprende.

El Museo de Arte Metropolitano de Nueva York desde 1948 ofrece una vez al año un evento donde el mundo de la moda y la Sociedad Neoyorquina se juntan. Anna Wintour -editora de VOGUE Estados Unidos- está a la cabeza de la exhibición desde 1995, y así esta Gala se convirtió en uno de los eventos de moda más comentados alrededor del mundo.

Haber vivido en NY tantos años tiene muchas ventajas y una de ellas fue visitar estas exhibiciones año tras año durante toda una década.

"Cuerpos Celestiales: La Moda y la Imaginación Católica" ("Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination") estuvo 5 meses exhibida, tiempo suficiente para que cientos de miles de turistas y residentes puedan zambullirse en la larga historia que hay entre la moda y la Iglesia Católica.

La muestra incluye piezas únicas, traídas desde la capilla Sixtina, que nunca antes habían salido del Vaticano, como túnicas papales y accesorios litúrgicos. También, un vestido de novia de Chanel inspirado en la comunión, una creación mosaica de Dolce & Gabanna y piezas de Valentino inspiradas en batas de monjes. Mas de 150 prendas forman parte de la exhibición,

Hoy hablo de esto que ya pasó hace 4 años, porque realmente me impactó, y en el baúl de las exhibiciones a las que he asistido, esta fue la que cautivo todos mis sentidos.

Controversial? Yes, a lot! There are those who say that there are mixes that should not be done, and this one in particular made a lot of noise and gave so much to talk about.

What I believe is that if we mix Religion and Fashion, we have a very interesting combination that goes far back, so far back in time, that it is surprising.

Since 1948, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York offers an event once a year where the world of fashion and New York Society come together. Anna Wintour -editor of VOGUE United States- has been at the head of the exhibition since 1995, and thus this Gala became one of the most talked about fashion events around the world.

Having lived in NY for so many years has many advantages and one of them was visiting these exhibitions year after year for a whole decade.

"Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" was on display for 5 months, enough time for hundreds of thousands of tourists and residents to dive into the long history between fashion and the Catholic Church.

The exhibition includes unique pieces, brought from the Sistine Chapel, that have never left the Vatican before, such as papal robes and liturgical accessories. Also, a communion-inspired wedding dress by Chanel, a mosaic creation by Dolce & Gabbana and pieces by Valentino inspired by monks' robes. More than 150 garments are part of the exhibition,

Today I talk about this that happened 4 years ago, because it really impacted me, and in the trunk of the exhibitions I attended, this was the one that captivated all my senses.

El curador de la muestra, Andrew Bolton, hizo 12 viajes a Roma para conseguir piezas para esta exhibición, el pedía solo 6 y volvió con 42. Las piezas del Vaticano estaban separadas del resto de la muestra, esa fue una de las condiciones fundamentales para que se efectuara el préstamo.

Casi inmediatamente entrando al Museo te chocabas con el comienzo de la exhibición. O sea... ¡gigante!

La presentaron en dos lugares; The Met 5ta Av. y The Met Cloisters. Recorrías esos corredores, sala tras sala como si fuese una procesión, así lo clasificaron y realmente así lo sentías.

Algunos Diseñadores:

- Gianni Versace y su ultima colección en 1997 donde se inspiró en crucifijos.

- Dolce y Gabanna y una colección completa que fue inspirada por los Mosaicos de la Catedral Monreale, en Italia.

- Balenciaga, en 1945, diseñó para un coro en San Sebastián, España; y lo re-diseñó en lo 60's.

- Thierry Mugler, creó "El Invierno de los Ángeles", en los 80's y su inspiración se basaba en el Arcángel Gabriel.

The curator of the exhibition, Andrew Bolton, made 12 trips to Rome to obtain pieces for this exhibition, he only asked for 6 and returned with 42. The Vatican pieces were separated from the rest of the exhibition, that was one of the fundamental conditions for the loan to be made.

Almost immediately upon entering the Museum you collided with the beginning of the exhibition. I mean... giant!

They presented it in two places; The Met 5th Av. and The Met Cloisters. You walked through those corridors, room after room as if it were a procession, that's how they classified it and that's how you really felt it.

Some Designers:

- Gianni Versace and his last collection in 1997 where he was inspired by crucifixes.

- Dolce and Gabbana and a complete collection that was inspired by the Mosaics of the Monreale Cathedral, in Italy.

- Balenciaga, in 1945, designed for a choir in San Sebastián, Spain; and re-designed it in the 60's.

- Thierry Mugler, created "The Winter of the Angels", in the 80's and his inspiration was based on the Archangel Gabriel.

THE CLOISTERS :

The Cloisters, una sección del Metropolitan Museum of Art tiene un dato importante: para visitarla hay que dirigirse al norte de la isla, a un barrio de Manhattan al que pocos turistas llegan. Es un lugar verde, un parque encantador, lleno de senderos con vistas al río Hudson y al puente de George Washington. Aquí estaba la segunda parte de esta magnifica exhibición.

Esto no es algo que ocurre todos los años, pero en esta ocasión había tanto que mostrar que el MET en la 5Ta Av. no fue suficiente. La Capilla Fuentidueña me impactó. Se basaron en los 7 sacramentos de la Iglesia Católica, pero particularmente en el bautismo, comunión y casamiento. Una de las piezas más impactantes era un vestido de novias creado por Cristobal Balenciaga en el año 1967

La Galería de Vidrio (las últimas tres fotos de arriba) expusieron vestidos inspirados en las plantaciones medievales. Se enfocaron en diseñadores que usaron particulares flores y frutas que tienen un simbolismo cristiano, por ejemplo, el trigo.

The Cloisters, a section of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has an important fact: to visit it you have to go to the north of the island, to a Manhattan neighborhood where few tourists come. It is a green place, a lovely park, full of trails with views of the Hudson River and the George Washington Bridge. Here was the second part of this magnificent exhibition.

This is not something that happens every year, but this time there was so much to show that the MET on 5th Av. was not enough. The Fuentidueña Chapel impressed me. They were based on the 7 sacraments of the Catholic Church, but particularly on baptism, communion and marriage. One of the most impressive pieces was a wedding dress created by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1967

The Glass Gallery (last three photos above) showcased dresses inspired by medieval plantations. They focused on designers who used particular flowers and fruits that have Christian symbolism, for example wheat.
